Introduction to Coaching Skills
This session introduces the fundamentals of coaching in an accessible way, suitable for pupils and staff with no prior experience.
Participants begin by learning what coaching actually involves, and how it differs from teaching, giving advice, or instructing someone what to do. Coaching is about helping individuals think for themselves and arrive at their own answers. They then explore some simple ground rules, including confidentiality, mutual respect, and an understanding of what coaching can and cannot help with.
Participants go on to practise genuine listening, giving the other person their full attention rather than thinking ahead to what they will say next. They also learn how to ask good questions—open questions that encourage deeper thinking, rather than questions that lead someone towards a particular answer.
Finally, participants practise in small groups of three, taking it in turns to act as coach, coachee, and observer.
This session introduces participants to the basics of understanding and managing stress, suitable for pupils and staff with no prior knowledge of the topic. Participants begin by exploring the signs and symptoms of stress, learning to recognise how it can show up physically, emotionally, and behaviourally in themselves and others. They then look at common stressors and the biology of stress, understanding what triggers a stress response and how the body reacts, including the role of the nervous system and stress hormones.
The session moves on to behavioural approaches, looking at practical actions and habits that can help reduce and manage stress day to day. Participants then explore cognitive approaches, understanding how thoughts and thinking patterns can influence stress levels, and how reframing unhelpful thinking can help. Finally, the session introduces mindfulness techniques, learning simple practices to help them stay present and calm during stressful moments.
By the end, participants will have a toolkit of strategies spanning the biological, behavioural, cognitive, and mindfulness-based approaches to managing stress.
