Leader Apprenticeship with NPQLT

The Leader Apprenticeship with NPQLT is designed for individuals who currently hold, or are harbouring aspirations, to assume leadership roles in teaching, whether it be in a particular subject, year group, key stage, or educational phase.

The  Leader Apprenticeship with NPQLT is a dual award which has mapped the DfE’s NPQ for Leading Teaching (NPQLT) to the Level 4 Project Manager Apprenticeship.

The NPQLT provides an evidence-informed framework for teachers who have responsibilities for leading teaching in a subject, year group, or phase. It focuses on the essential components of high-quality classroom practice—including curriculum, assessment, and pedagogy—and how to lead other teachers in these areas.

The apprenticeship develops participants as skilled project leads, providing the technical expertise to plan, execute, and monitor educational initiatives. It offers a structured methodology to manage resources, mitigate risks, and lead teams through the lifecycle of a school-improvement project.

This combination develops strategic project managers who can drive high-quality teaching and learning across their teams.

Leader Apprenticeship with NPQLTD

The Leader Apprenticeship with NPQLTD is suitable for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading the development of other teachers in their school.

They may have responsibilities for the development of all teachers across a school or specifically trainees or teachers who are in the first two years of their career.

The  Leader Apprenticeship with NPQLTD is a dual award which has mapped the DfE’s NPQ for Leading Teacher Development (NPQLTD) to the Level 4 Project Manager Apprenticeship. This combination means learners concurrently earn two highly prestigious qualifications.

Learners gain specialised expertise in leading teaching from the NPQLTD. Simultaneously, the apprenticeship provides invaluable cross-sector insights and dedicated support, with practice-based learning ensuring new skills are embedded directly within their school.

Leader Apprenticeship with NPQLBC

The Leader Apprenticeship with NPQLBC is suitable for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading behaviour and/or supporting pupil wellbeing in their school.

Leading behaviour and culture is complex and professionals looking to lead in this area need to have expertise across a number of specialist areas related to their role (e.g. behaviour systems) and in approaches that, through working with their colleagues, enable their school to keep improving (e.g. professional development and implementation).

The NPQLBC provides an evidence-informed framework built around “learn that” and “learn how to,” defining what effective leadership of behaviour and culture looks like in practice. It focuses on creating a calm, safe and predictable environment by establishing consistent school-wide systems and supporting staff to manage pupil behaviour effectively.

The apprenticeship develops participants as skilled project leads, capable of planning, executing and monitoring complex initiatives. It provides the structured methodology needed to manage resources, mitigate risks and lead teams through the lifecycle of a school-improvement project.

This combination means leaders develop as strategic leaders who can shape whole-school practice, culture and performance.

Leader Apprenticeship with NPQSL

The Leader Apprenticeship with NPQSL is for school leaders who are, or are aspiring to be, a senior leader with cross-school responsibilities.

Although the role varies, many senior leaders contribute to all aspects of the school through the leadership team as well as having a specific whole school responsibility of their own. This means the role is often both operational and strategic and relies on working with and through colleagues (in particular, through middle leaders) to ensure every pupil gets an excellent education.

The Leader Apprenticeship with NPQSL is a dual award that integrates the DfE’s NPQ for Senior Leadership (NPQSL) to the Level 5 Learning and Development Apprenticeship.

The NPQSL provides an evidence-informed framework built around “learn that” and “learn how to,” defining what effective senior leadership looks like across a whole-school context. It focuses on driving school-wide improvement through high-quality teaching, effective curriculum design and a positive, ambitious school culture.

The apprenticeship develops participants as strategic leaders of learning and improvement, able to diagnose organisational need, influence stakeholders, and design professional development that delivers measurable impact.

Together, the programme develops senior leaders not just as managers of specific areas, but as strategic leaders who can shape school-wide practice, culture and long-term performance.

Leader Apprenticeship with NPQH

This programme is suitable for school leaders who are, or are aspiring to be, a headteacher or head of school with responsibility for leading a school.

Although some headteachers and principals still teach, the role is primarily a strategic and operational one and relies on working with and through their colleagues (in particular, through the leadership team) to ensure every pupil gets an excellent education.

The Leader Apprenticeship with NPQH is a dual award which has mapped the DfE’s flagship NPQ for Headship (NPQH) to the Level 5 Learning and Development Apprenticeship.

The NPQH provides an evidence-informed framework built around “learn that” and “learn how to,” defining the knowledge and skills essential for highly effective headship. It focuses on the strategic leadership of a school, covering everything from establishing an ethical culture and professional climate to overseeing teaching, curriculum, and organisational management.

The apprenticeship develops headteachers as strategic leaders of learning, capable of diagnosing complex organisational needs and designing the high-level professional development strategies required to drive school-wide improvement.

This combination means headteachers are equipped as strategic leaders who can shape whole-school practice, culture and performance.

Leader Apprenticeship with NPQ for SENCOs

This programme is designed for SENCOs, teachers and school leaders who are leading, or aspiring to lead, SEND provision and inclusive practice

It is particularly suited to those who recognise that the SENCO role is both strategic and operational, requiring influence across teaching, curriculum, behaviour and staff development.

Participants should have the opportunity to apply their learning in their setting and be ready to work through others, leading change that improves participation, achievement and outcomes for pupils with SEND.

The Leader Apprenticeship with NPQ for SENCOs is a dual award that integrates the DfE’s NPQ for SENCOs with the Level 5 Learning and Development Apprenticeship.

The NPQ provides an evidence-informed framework built around “learn that” and “learn how to”, defining what effective SEND leadership looks like in practice. It focuses on improving outcomes for pupils through high-quality teaching, provision and inclusive culture.

The apprenticeship develops participants as strategic leaders of learning and improvement, able to diagnose organisational need, influence stakeholders and design professional development that delivers measurable impact.

Together, the programme develops SENCOs not just as specialists in SEND, but as leaders who can shape whole-school practice, culture and performance.

"Supportive"

“Having completed a number of professional qualifications during my time as a teacher, I have found this course to be the one that most clearly impacted upon my practice. I am very grateful to my Course Tutor for their advice, support and listening ear over the time of the course. Headship can be isolating and I found the regular meetings very supportive beyond the parameters of the course.”

"Effective"

“Having completed a number of professional qualifications during my time as a teacher, I have found this course to be the one that most clearly impacted upon my practice. In particular, the focus on linking theory and wider reading to my day job was hugely effective. Rather than reflecting on hypotheticals, the course felt embedded in the reality of my job”
