School governors are the strategic leaders within a school environment and it is vital that they are suitably trained. Ofsted are now asking inspectors to ensure governors are trained and to reinforce the commitment, the DfE have awarded Governor Training Licences to facilitate high quality training for governors.

Alliance of Leading Learning are offering training to support you in becoming a highly effective senior leader with the skills, confidence and knowledge to contribute towards the strategic development of your school.

The programme consists of face-to-face sessions, either 3 full days or 6 twilight sessions and it is expected that the course will be completed within 9 months.  We are also now able to offer our programme as a fully online programme.

We tailor the programme to suit the requirements of governors and to fit in with your busy schedules. All programmes will be facilitated within schools conveniently located in the North and in the Midlands, so it will be easy to find a venue to suit you.  Click here for more details on our delivery locations.

Our Delivery Model

Our delivery model adopts a blended learning approach – prioritising learning through face-to-face sessions with specific learning underpinned by experts in the field of visible learning. The essential facilitated learning by expert facilitators, who are practising governance leaders, is supported by self-directed learning through think pieces, online learning, current cutting-edge research, work-based practice and exposure to outstanding National Leaders of Governance as mentors.

We are now also able to offer our programme as a purely online programme and although we plan to still deliver face-t0-face session in Autumn 2020 we do have a back up plan to deliver these purely online.

The programme costs £500 per governor.  Funding is available from the Department For Education who will fund the full cost of the Governance Development Programme for two governors per school (or Board) per 12 month period.

For clarification the DfE will fund two people per board within a 12 month period for example if you have one person starting in January and the second person starting in March, that board will be eligible for an additional person the following January (i.e. a 12 month lapse between starting is required). Please note that if your board has already taken up funded governance training from us or another provider or if you are not sure if your board is eligible please speak to us and we can check your eligibility.

Programme Summary

The proposed programme consists of 3 core face-to-face, day long, facilitated sessions (or 6 twilight sessions) focused around the Governor Competency Framework and incorporating more generic and transferable leadership skills. All materials are devised by our highly skilled and experienced team of governor leads, school leaders and advanced facilitators to ensure the programme remains at the cutting-edge of education.

  1. Assessment of Board’s strengths and development needs
  2. An ambitious Action Plan
  3. Measured progress against Action Plan

The course will lead to you being a more effective governor, able to demonstrate a cohesive vision for the school and show full accountability for the educational performance of the children and for financial effectiveness.  Throughout the sessions there will be regular steps to practise your learning in a safe environment which will lead to a school based completion of an action plan and learning log by the end of the course.

I value the chance to spend time with governors from other schools and to see how they manage things…..Taking part in this course has increased my confidence to present ideas and suggestions to my board”   Carol Pinnington, Chair of Governors, Knowsley Junior School

“An excellent course that allowed the sharing of experience, reinforcing the knowledge that seasoned governors have. The course material was excellent… This course should be mandatory for all chairs” Mark Liquorish, Chair of Governors, Marches School
